Richard Wood: Norman Landscape

Richard Wood Norman landscape

In MM’s personal collection of paintings is an untitled oil on canvas by the artist representing a view across an alley in the old part of Norman from the window of a basement apartment where Richard had lived. MM witnessed the production of the painting from an 8” x 10” glossy photo, which Richard had himself taken, to the finished canvas. After discussing with Richard the photo, attached to a piece of cardboard with masking tape, for several months, the decision was made to go ahead. MM watched as Richard stretched a canvas on a wooden frame, projected a slide onto its bare surface sized with gesso and, using a piece of charcoal, sketched its principal features. Then, in Richard’s studio on the North Base in Norman, MM visited the artist almost daily as the work evolved. Finally, he received the finished painting at home, where Richard completed it by applying lacquer to its surface. It now hangs over the head of his bed in Thailand.
